ISavonaPort_Italytaly’s port of Savona is extending its Darsena Alti Fondali quay at a cost of €9m ($13.2m). The move means that Savona Terminal Auto (STA), the specialist finished vehicles facility at the port, will be also be expanding, with the building of a multi-storey vehicle storage facility of approximately 8,500 sq.m on the existing terminal.

In addition to car traffic, the terminal will handle special breakbulk equipment, and to handle both types of freight two rail lines are being built in parallel to the quay that will allow direct access to/from rail transporter wagons to the vessels at berth.

STA also intends to build a new railway line specifically to simplify operations on the quay.

Storage areas, accessible either through a dedicated gate for car transporters or by rail, are additionally to be designated as a customs warehouse, of which 60,000 sq.m will be uncovered and 10,000 sq.m sheltered. These will be able to accommodate some 6,000 vehicles, with storage to be organised either per consignment or per destination.

Existing annual capacity is 150,000 vehicles, although this will be considerably expanded once all work is completed.
