Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics is now using the Port of Gothenburg as a centre for high and heavy ro-ro transhipment from the Americas and Asia to St Petersburg, Russia.

The new weekly service from Gothenburg to St Petersburg via Kotka, in Finland, will carry agricultural and construction equipment as well as vehicles.

WWL claims the service to be more efficient because it transports vehicles and equipment on one Large Car/Truck Carrier (LCTC) – the M/V Vinni – rather than them being transhipped from various ports in Europe using smaller feeder vessels.

Kristofer Andrén, CEO, Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics Sweden, said: "This is a key development in establishing Gothenburg as a gateway for cars and agricultural and construction equipment emanating from Asia and North America and destined for Finland and Russia."

The M/V Vinni is capable of carrying a wide range of cargoes, including cars, buses, trucks and high and heavy ro-ro machinery, such as construction and agricultural equipment, as well as other non-containerised cargo. The vessel has three ro-ro decks with a height up to 5.6 metres as well as car decks.

WWL also recently saw the maiden voyage of its largest LCTC – the M/V Tijuca – to the Port of Tacoma in the US. The new vessel has a capacity for 7,500 vehicles.
