The Port of Philadelphia’s Southport Auto Terminal is in the heart of the US Mid-Atlantic population center making it an ideal distribution point for automobiles and ro/ro cargoes. Near-dock rail intermodal facilities provide unsurpassed access throughout the USA and Canada via CSX and Norfolk Southern. Recently the Port has announced its largest ever capital expansion and automobiles and Ro-Ro cargo will play a large role. These improvements include new acreage, a new berth and improvements to existing facilities.
PhilaPort’s Southport Auto Terminal currently processes approximately 150,000 cars per year. The automobile handling complex will receive $93 million toward improvements which include: 155 paved and fenced acres above the 300-year flood plain; the creation of a second VPC site, enhancements at the main auto processing site at Pier 98 annex and a second vessel berth. These upgrades will more than double the Port’s automobile throughput capacity and allow PhilaPort the ability to handle in excess of 350,000 vehicles per year.
With its partners, DVR and GLOVIS, PhilaPort has a goal is to double car throughput capacity and at the same time facilitate handling of the current business more efficiently. The improvements will also allow the partnership to jointly pursue other OEMs for both import and export business. The arrival of the M/V GLOVIS Comet with 2,176 Hyundai and Kia automobiles marks the first vessel to call the pier in twenty years, giving The Port of Philadelphia a vital second berth for the importation and exportation of automobiles and roll-on roll-off (Ro-Ro) cargoes.
