Delivering the pace of change in Mexico: Local, Digital, Flexible

Mexico’s automotive supply chain has huge growth potential through localisation and technology but must overcome capacity and infrastructure constraints. This year’s ALSC Mexico conference brings together the industry’s leading manufacturers, logistics providers and officials to ensure the supply chain can deliver Mexico’s rapid pace of change.

Mexican automotive logistics is on the rise. As vehicle production in North America recovers from the pandemic and chip shortages, output and new cars sales in Mexico are increasing. The country’s electrification race has accelerated, with manufacturers investing to build EVs and key components in the country. Mexico also stands to benefit from a rebalancing in global supply chains, as automotive manufacturers localise more key products and suppliers in North America.

But there are risks threatening this trajectory. Suppliers are struggling to keep up with OEM production volumes and call off schedules. Logistics capacity for components and finished vehicles is constrained for nearly all services and transport modes. Customs clearance and border crossings face delays. There are ongoing security and vandalism issues for certain routes. And there are major questions on long-term investment from government and key stakeholders in infrastructure, from transport capacity to the charging and sustainable energy supply that will be critical to EV growth and reduced emissions.

The challenges are many, but it is not too late for the industry to get ahead of the issues. This year’s conference will focus on helping the industry align on plans and requirements; to drive long-term investment in logistics equipment; introduce advanced data and visibility tools; and develop the skills and working culture to succeed despite high volatility.
