The US-based Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Catena-X, the data-sharing automotive industry platform, to act as its North American hub and open the data-driven automotive network to its association members.

The announcement was made at this week’s AIAG 2024 Hybrid IMDS, Product Compliance & Sustainability Conference in Livonia, Michigan.

AIAG said the partners intend to formalise the agreement by the end of 2024 and prepare to launch the North American hub to automotive manufacturers and suppliers in early 2025. AIAG represents global automotive companies and is comprised of more than 4,900 members, including OEMs and tier suppliers, in over 70 countries.

Catena-X was established in 2021 by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, and the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA). It creates uniform standards for data and information exchange across the supply chain. The exchange of data is managed on a peer-to-peer system that aims to ensure security, confidentiality and integrity in the exchange of supply chain data. Catena-X currently has more than 192 members.

Its goal is to establish standardised data sharing and collaboration across the automotive supply chain to improve transparency, efficiency and sustainability in production and supply chain processes. That includes more closely connecting carmakers, suppliers and technology partners so that they can track parts, materials and vehicles and look for opportunities to build in more sustainable production practices.

“With AIAG as our North American hub, we’re excited to expand and strengthen our collaborative approach to tackle some of our industry’s toughest challenges,” said Oliver Ganser, chairman of the board, Catena-X. “We enable automotive companies to optimise their business processes by seamlessly sharing data, choosing the solution of their choice, reducing costs and driving sustainable practices across the value chain.”

AIAG CEO, Matthew Pohlman said partnering with Catena-X will strengthen the development of collaborative standards for the automotive industry and drive value for its members as part of a global network.

The AIAG said it will serve collaboratively as the lead for its members giving it a collective voice to help shape Catena-X for the North American automotive industry.

“The AIAG team will establish standards, training solutions and verifications/certifications for participating in Catena-X’s global ecosystem to ensure members get the most value out of this ground-breaking opportunity,” said the association.
