Session 1: Charting the future
 

North America’s finished vehicle supply chains are handling huge numbers of cars. The US’s 40 vehicle-handling ports alone processed some 10m tonnes of vehicles last year, with around 7,065 port calls by 2,900 ro-ro vessels, according to the US Maritime Administration. But such high volumes of imports and exports can easily congest supply chains – leaving OEMs, port operators, shipping lines and logistics providers with a major headache.

Vehicle volumes are not the only problem for ports – they also have to deal with the challenges of increasing vessel sizes, bunching in ship arrival times, constraints in their own storage capacity and problems in network visibility. All of these can add to the volume pressures, slowing operations and crowding yards.

This session will consider:

  • What the key challenges are for ports in managing flows of ships and vehicles
  • How communications and network visibility can be improved and what difference this will really make
  • What the technology innovations are that will drive change and how soon they are likely to be doing so
  • The many ways in which traditional port eco-systems will evolve as a result

With input from OEMs, port operators, technology providers, terminal operators and shipping lines, this session will underline the ways in which ports can reinvent themselves to address the operational issues currently holding them back.
