Driving change – building confidence – strengthening investment
The North American automotive sector is holding its breath as it awaits the outcome of ongoing negotiations over the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) between Mexico, Canada and the US. Should President Trump make good on recent rhetoric about walking away from this longstanding free trade agreement and impose steep tariffs or taxes on vehicles produced in Mexico, it could turn current automotive production and logistics patterns right across North America upside down.
Nowhere would the effects be felt more keenly than in Mexico, where rampant growth in the car industry in recent years has already been dampened by the US’s new protectionist stance, which has led to some carmakers, like Ford, cancelling or scaling back on their investment plans in the country and to a sharp decline in the peso.
Despite all the uncertainty over international trade and a plateau in its own domestic car sales, however, it’s still very much business as usual in Mexico’s vibrant auto sector. Carmakers like Audi and VW continue to produce healthy numbers of vehicles at their production facilities in the country while BMW pushes ahead with plans for a new plant in San Luis Potosi, due to begin production in 2019. Rail operator Kansas City Southern has just opened a new cargo processing facility at Laredo to speed up customs inspections on goods moving north by rail into Texas, meanwhile. And Mexico’s ports have never been busier, reporting a boom in finished vehicle traffic in the first five months of 2017 – including growing volumes of imports from Asia as Mexico successfully strengthens its trade links with other parts of the world, particularly China and Europe.
As Mexico’s auto sector continues to evolve, so too must its supply chains.
