DB Schenker has formed a joint venture with Chinese logistics provider Shenyang Jinbei Automotive and plans to build a €12m ($15m) logistics centre in the Tiexi district of Shenyang close to a number of OEMs, including BMW Brilliance Automotive. The facility is expected to be ready at the beginning of 2016.
The joint venture, which is called Schenker Jinbei Logistics (Shenyang), will start operations at the beginning of next year, offering distribution and forwarding services across ocean, air and road.
"The formation of this joint venture is an important milestone for us, getting us closer to our objective to become China’s leading logistics service provider," said Jochen Thewes, regional director APAC, Schenker.
The 45,000 sq.m facility planned for 2016, meanwhile, will be located in close proximity to carmakers and their tier one and two suppliers situated in the area. Shenyang Jinbei Automotive is also investing in an automotive supplier park close to the BMW-Brilliance Automotive (BBA) production plant.
According to DB Schenker the new logistics hub will provide the full range of logistics services. These include: customised logistics solutions, supply chain management, pick and pack, just-in-time/sequence inventory, inventory management, quality control, cross docking and vendor managed inventory, as well as distribution and forwarding services to its customers.
Shenyang is a centre for foreign and domestic investments in China and one of the largest automotive clusters in China. DB Schenker opened its office there in 2003 and has been growing steadily since then. It already provides a rail service for BMW Brilliance, moving CKD kits from the Leipzig-Wahren transshipment terminal in Germany on a 23-day journey via the Trans-Siberian Railway to Shenyang.
