Con-way Freight has named Stephen Dean as its vice-president of sales. He will join the company, which provides less-than-truckload (LTL) services, on November 25 and moves there from Ryder Supply Chain Solutions (SCS) where he has been senior vice-president of sales, marketing and solutions management.
In his new role he will be responsible for leading a team of over 400 sales professionals supporting the carrier’s 300+ service centres in North America. He will also oversee sales operations planning, customer development strategies, sales training and the application of lean methodologies and practices throughout the sales process.
“Steve Dean is a respected sales professional who has developed and led innovative, successful sales organisations in both trucking and third party logistics,” said Greg Lehmkuhl, president, Con-way Freight. “We’re pleased to welcome Steve to the Con-way Freight team, and we look forward to his insight and leadership as we advance our sales organisation to the next level.”
Dean has worked in freight transport and logistics for around 30 years. Before Ryder he spent 17 years with Menlo Worldwide Logistics, joining in 1991 as its first business development manager and moving on to become senior director of business development for Menlo’s Global Automotive Industry group. He began his career in 1983 in LTL operations and sales, and over the next eight years worked for LTL carriers such as Ryder PIE, Smith Transfer, Preston Trucking and Central Transport. In 1990 he became vice president of operations for Rite Truck Lines.
