Hyundai Motor Company has appointed Jose Muñoz as the OEM’s new president and CEO, effective from January 1, 2025.
After five years at the company, Muñoz will take over as Hyundai’s new global CEO next year. In the role, he will lead the carmaker’s global business, succeeding Jaehoon Chang, who has been promoted to vice chair of Hyundai Motor Group.
In his new role, Muñoz will oversee the exaction of Hyundai’s ‘Progress for Humanity’ strategy, which the company says builds on electrification, diversified powertrain offerings and hydrogen technology.
Muñoz joined the OEM in 2019 as president and global chief operating officer, and president and CEO of the firm’s Genesis Motor North America division. He was appointed to the Company Board of Directors in 2022 and also led global sales, service and production planning as part of the Global Operations division.
Previously, Muñoz held roles at Nissan for 15 years, eventually moving up to become chief performance officer at Nissan, and chairman of Nissan North America, in 2019.
At Hyundai, Muñoz has “enhanced operational performance, strengthened dealership networks and improved the company’s competitiveness by attracting and retaining top leadership talent,” the carmaker said in a statement. He drove a profitability-focused sales structure through optimised volume and profit management, Nissan said, which resulted in record sales and market share growth.
Under his leadership, $12.6 billion is being invested to build the new Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America production facility, as well as two battery joint ventures in Georgia. The carmaker has been building out its supply chain in Georgia in recent years, having moved to Colonel’s Island terminal in Brunswick, Georgia in 2022 and building a new vehicle processing centre.
Muñoz’s predecessor said he is a “proven leader with vast global experience and is ideally suited to lead Hyundai as competitiveness and business uncertainty increases”.

Commenting on his appointment, Muñoz said: “Succeeding in this challenging industry requires excellence throughout the value chain, from design and engineering, to manufacturing, sales and service, along with a talented team that’s able to deliver every step of the way. I’m excited and motivated by the challenge ahead and want to continue Hyundai’s growth trajectory and laser-focus on exceeding customer expectations.”
