The Mar Ligure Occidentale Port Authority , which oversees operations at the port of Savona in northwest Italy, has received notification from Savona Terminal Auto that it intends to proceed with construction of a multi-level storage facility at its terminal. Work will commence in September.
The new building will be integrated into an existing structure that already forms part of the company’s concession in the port, which is located on the Darsena Alti Fondali dock. It will eventually provide 8,500 sq.m of multi-level covered storage and boost capacity to 250,000 finished vehicles a year.
Savona Terminal Auto is to provide investment of more than €9m ($10.1m) to undertake the necessary work, which it needs to carry out to meet increased operational needs as a result of buoyant ro-ro traffic at the port. The terminal currently handles around 15 ro-ro vessels weekly.
The port authority said that building the new parking facility will form part of the existing concession contract, which is expires in 2041. In effect, all facilities operated by the company will now constitute a single concession.
Savona Terminal Auto is owned by freight forwarding company, Marittima Spedizioni.
