As GKN Automotive continues to advance its sustainability goals, its efforts resonate with themes of resilience and collaboration. These achievements will inform discussions at the Automotive Logistics and Supply Chain Europe event in Bonn, where GKN will share insights into sustainable procurement and logistics.
GKN Automotive has been awareded an EcoVadis Gold rating for sustainability, moving up form its Silver rating it was awarded in 2023, and Bronze rating in 2022. The achievement, awarded by sustainability assessor and benchmarker EcoVadis, places the automotive supplier in the top 1% of participants in its category, and the top 5% of particpants overall.
The powertrain supplier received the award for its announcement of its science-based targets initiative (SBTi) approved net-zero roadmap, its commitment to renewable electricity, strengthened sustainable procurement practices, and strengthened reporting processes in its annual sustainability report.
How does the Gold EcoVadis rating work?
EcoVadis is a leading platform for assessing corporate sustainability performance across diverse industries. Its evaluations are grounded in internationally recognised standards, including the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the United Nations Global Compact, International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions, and ISO 26000 guidelines.
An EcoVadis Gold rating signifies that a company ranks within the top 5% of all organisations assessed by EcoVadis in terms of sustainability performance. This prestigious recognition reflects a strong commitment to sustainable practices across four key areas:
-
Environment: Evaluating efforts to minimise environmental impact through energy efficiency, waste management, and pollution prevention.
-
Labour & Human Rights: Assessing fair labour practices, health and safety standards, and respect for human rights within the organisation.
-
Ethics: Reviewing adherence to ethical business conduct, including anti-corruption measures and fair competition.
-
Sustainable Procurement: Examining the integration of sustainability criteria in procurement processes and supplier relationships.
To achieve a Gold rating, a company must attain a score that places it in the 95th percentile or higher among all evaluated companies. As of 2024, this corresponds to a score of 73 out of 100 on the EcoVadis scorecard.
”Being a sustainable business is critical to our long-term future, and this improved rating reflects our work to position our business, as well as our customers’, for this future,” said Dr. Clare Wyatt, chief people, communications & sustainability officer at GKN Automotive. “Importantly, this assessment further enables us to identify areas for improvement and ensure we’re clear on the steps in reaching our long-term goals.”
GKN’s efforts align closely with the themes of the Automotive Logistics and Supply Chain Europe 2025 event.
The event, taking place 18-20 March, will focus on how the automotive supply chain in Europe can drive sustainability across its entire logistics value chain, from packaging to finished vehicle logistics, and how green logistics can be a competitive solution.
Chris Payne, Global Logistics Director, Supply Chain at GKN Automotive and Gabriel Mair, Commodity Procurement Director, Transport/Logistics and Capex at GKN, will be taking to the stage to discuss GKN’s sustainability strategy further.
