At the Automotive Logistics & Supply Chain Europe event, Philip Bittermann, editor-in-chief of Neue Verpackung – Automotive Logistics’ sister publication – shared a wrap-up of the insights discussed onsite about the evolving landscape of packaging in the automotive industry. A key focus was the new EU packaging regulation, PPWR, which is driving the industry to adopt more reusable packaging solutions. Bittermann emphasised that while this is a positive step towards sustainability, “there are challenges in using recycled materials within packaging strategies.”

Bittermann also touched on the growing demand for cost efficiency in packaging – a key theme throughout the packaging sessions. He noted that speakers agreed standardising packaging within companies and across the industry could significantly reduce costs and increase operational efficiency. He said, “Cost efficiency topics, like standardising packaging, are vital for achieving greater sustainability without sacrificing profitability.”

Another crucial topic was the transition from combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs). As the automotive industry shifts towards electrification, new packaging solutions for lithium ecosystems are required. Bittermann highlighted the need for innovative packaging strategies tailored to these new challenges.

With such a dynamic shift in packaging needs, the future of automotive logistics lies in balancing sustainability, cost efficiency, and innovation. Bittermann concluded by encouraging the industry to continue evolving and adapting to these emerging demands.
