From the beginning of July this year Danny Auerswald will take over as managing director of VW Saxony, a role that includes leadership of technology and logistics at the Zwickau, Chemnitz and Dresden plants. He will be effectively managing a production network that is currently 100% electric vehicle. Auerswald replaces Robert Janssen, who moves to lead production and product management at SAIC Volkswagen in Shanghai as executive vice-president.
Auerswald has been leading production of Audi and VW models at the VW Group’s plant in Bratislava, Slovakia, a role he took up in 2022. Previous to that he was site manager of the Transparent Factory in Dresden and oversaw the start of ID.3 production there. In 2020 he explained the production transformation and supply chain streamlining at the Dresden plant at the Automotive Logistics and Supply Chain Live conference. Auerswald also managed Volkswagen Group’s assembly plant in Pekan, Malaysia between 2016-2020, where he was responsible for the production of the Passat, Tiguan, Polo, Vento and Jetta. Auerswald started his career in production and logistics at VW in 2013, following five years at Volkswagen Consulting.
“Danny Auerswald combines regional and international experience and is therefore the ideal choice as managing director of Volkswagen Sachsen,” said Dr Christian Vollmer, board chairman at Volkswagen Saxony and head of production and logistics of the Volkswagen brand. “I look forward to continuing to successfully manage the Volkswagen locations in Saxony together with him.”
Vollmer also acknowledged Janssen’s contribution to smooth production and stable processes across the three plants Saxony at a challenging time for the automotive industry.
“He has aligned Volkswagen Sachsen specifically to the significantly changed production situation due to market conditions at all three locations over the past twelve months,” said Vollmer. “Robert Janssen, a China expert, is now returning to Shanghai. I wish him every success in his new tasks and look forward to continuing to work together.”
Janssen joined VW in 2000 and has held several roles in Germany and overseas including technical management at Auto5000 in Wolfsburg, management of the Kaluga body shop in Russia and management of all SAIC Volkswagen production sites in China. He took over the chairmanship and the technology and logistics department at Volkswagen Sachsen in 2022.
